1.Southern States in India will conduct Joint Elephant Census.

  • A synchronized elephant census will be conducted from May 23-25 in the border areas of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
  • The census aims to understand conflict areas and enhance inter-state coordination for future planning and policy-making.
  • Since 1986, the Asian elephant has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

2.National Anti-Terrorism Day: 21st May

  • National Anti-Terrorism Day is celebrated in India to commemorate the death anniversary of former Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi.
  • Rajiv Gandhi, the sixth PM of India was assassinated on May 21, 1991.

3.The Supreme Court of India told the Rajasthan government on May 15 to close 68 mines that are less than one kilometer from the Sariska Tiger Reserve.

  • The Sariska Tiger Reserve is in the Indian state of Rajasthan, in the district of Alwar.
  • It became a wildlife reserve in 1955 and was declared a tiger reserve in 1978.
  • All of Sariska’s tigers had been killed by poachers, by 2004.

4.Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Warns Against Using Calcium Carbide For Fruit Ripening.

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established in 2006 under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
  • Calcium Carbide is a crystalline (sand- like) powder with a garlic-like odor. It is used to generate Acetylene gas, as a reducing agent, and in steel manufacturing and metal cutting.
  • Ethylene gas is a natural plant hormone that speeds up the ripening process.
